Arnis was developed by the indigenous population of the Philippines, who used a range of weapons for combat and self-defense. Arnis included both simple and sharp weapons and traditionally included rattan, swords, daggers and spears. Like all martial arts, Arnis is primarily defensive and includes melee, grappling and disarmament techniques. However, in addition to improvised weapons, the fighting style also includes the use of bladed weapons and sticks. A stick-shaped stick is the main melee tool and weapon used in official arnis competitions. The Philippine government`s declaration of Arnis as a national sport codified a clear culture of martial art. This should begin to develop an accessible history of Filipino cultural heritage that can grasp the outside world, as Japan did during the Edo period (1603-1868) and as China`s postcultural revolution did with Wushu. The official adoption of Arnis as a national martial art and sport is heralded by the inscription of the Arnis symbol in the official seal of the Philippine Sports Commission and making it the first sports competition played by participating teams on the first day of the annual Palarong Pambansa. The Philippine Sports Commission is the lead authority for the implementation of the provisions of this Act. Hand-to-hand combat, fast-paced combat looks great on screen, and no martial style embraces Arnis` combative speed — no wonder he`s so popular with Hollywood directors. The Bourne Identity (2002) depicts a hybrid kali/jeet kune do fighting style when Jason Bourne meets Jarda, the only other living agent in the cancelled „Treadstone“ program. Vin Diesel and Jason Statham also engage in Eskrima-inspired battles with metal pipes and keys instead of sticks in the final battle scene of Furious 7 (2015). When the Spanish finally returned and successfully conquered parts of the Philippines, Arni traditions were preserved despite their prohibition in the form of ritual dances, performances, and mock battles. While earlier Filipino martial arts were influenced by Spanish colonization, modern forms were influenced by the country`s contact with the United States and Japan after independence in 1898. Just over a century later, in 2009, the government of the Philippines declared Arnis a martial art and a national sport of the Philippines.

In 1521, armed with nothing but bladed weapons and their fearsome Arnis abilities, the Filipino islanders defeated Ferdinand Magellan`s armored and musket-carrying Spanish conquistadors as they attempted to invade. In Kick-Ass (2010), the eponymous character fights crime with aris sticks, while his Hit-Girl uses Filipino Balisong knives. In Taken (2008), Liam Neeson uses a combination of Arnis, Wing Chun and Silat to save his daughter from her French kidnappers. James Bond also defeats a knife-wielding assassin with Filipino martial arts in Quantum of Solace, the 2008 episode of the James Bond franchise. The competitive Arnis usually takes one of two forms: the performance-based Anyo model or the combative Leban. Anyo competitions are judged based on the overall choreography of the performances, including grace, strength, and power. Meanwhile, the Lebanese form tests the agility and reaction of the participants, as competitions are judged based on the number of blows inflicted. Although most Lebanese competitions exclude physical contact such as grappling, blocking and disarming an opponent with their hands or feet, there are a few exceptions where full contact is allowed. Republic Act No. 9850 A law declaring Arnis the national martial art and sport of the Philippines. It is the policy of the state to inculcate patriotism, nationalism and appreciation of the role of heroes and national symbols in the historical development of the country. In addition, the State shall give priority to education, science and technology, art and culture, and sports, in order to promote patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social progress and promote the total liberation and development of man.
