In 2006, the university became the first in the UK to establish an independent university in China, making it the first Sino-British university in the world. In the 21st century, physicists, engineers and technicians from the University of Liverpool have been involved in the construction of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and have worked on two of the LHC`s four detectors. In the Times Good University Guide 2013, the University of Liverpool ranked 29th and Liverpool was ranked 122nd in the world (and 15th in the UK) in the 2016 university rankings. [46] During the 2013/2014 school year, workers participated in numerous strikes after workers were offered a 1% wage increase, which had been equivalent to a 13% wage cut for unions since 2008. The strikes were supported by both the university`s Student Guild and the National Union of Students. [18] Some university students supported the strike and occupied buildings on campus. [19] Following a Royal Charter and an Act of Parliament in 1903, it became an independent university (the University of Liverpool) with the right to grant its own degrees. In the following years there were important developments at the university, including the discovery of the synapse by Sir Charles Sherrington and William Blair-Bell`s work on chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer. From the 1930s to the 1940s, Sir James Chadwick and Sir Joseph Rotblat made important contributions to the development of the atomic bomb. The Christie Cup is a university competition between Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester. The Varsity Cup is a popular derby between Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool University. The University is a research-based university with 33,000 students pursuing over 450 programs in 54 areas. It has a wide range of teaching and research in art and science, and the University of Liverpool Medical School, founded in 1835, is now one of the largest medical schools in Britain. It also has close links with the nearby Royal Liverpool University Hospital. In 2018, the university was heavily criticized by the student body for making available dormitories too expensive through the „Cut the Rent“ campaign. [62] Liverpool was the first UK university to develop its desktop power management solution, which has been widely adopted by other institutions. [27] The university subsequently experimented with other advanced software approaches that further increase savings. [28] The university was also a leader in using the Condor HTC computing platform in a low-power environment. This software, which uses unused computer time for compute-intensive tasks, usually keeps computers turned on. [29] The university demonstrated an effective solution to this problem using a combination of wake-on-LAN and commercial power management software. [30] The university previously had a strategic partnership with Laureate International Universities, a for-profit collegiate collective, for the University of Liverpool`s online degrees.
