When it comes to hotel rooms, the labels used to describe rooms can sometimes be vague and downright mysterious. Words like „superior“ and „luxury“ are thrown around all the time, but they don`t have a consistent definition and sometimes don`t have meaningful distinctions. As you can see, Junior Suites can take different forms. I always stick to my definition of a separate sitting area, separated from the sleeping area by some sort of partition, as the norm for a junior suite. However, it`s clear that hotels have different definitions and meanings that they attach to Junior Suite etiquette, so it`s not always clear what to expect. For me, a junior suite is a hotel room with the following: A standard room is the most booked type of accommodation – 80% of the time, to be exact. You get a single room with one or more king, queen, double or twin beds, desk, bathroom and maybe closet, TV and chest of drawers. A suite is a much larger accommodation. It usually has a private bathroom, a seating area and most often a dining area. Think of it as a furnished apartment-style living room, which can range from 400 square feet to 3000 square feet (or more!). This is what the room looked like.
As you can see, it looks like a standard hotel room. Suite prices are rarely closer to your travel dates. In fact, Suiteness Suites are booked on average 54 days in advance. It is best to book connecting suites 2 to 3 months in advance for better rates and, above all, better availability. A perfect example of a junior suite was when we stayed at the Hilton Cabana in Miami. It was a decent hotel right on the beach and our junior suite was exactly what I expected from a junior suite. If your father`s name is Benjamin, then you get the Junior Suite and he gets the Regular Suite! 🙂 I used to use the number of TVs as a factor (2 for a true „suite“ designation). But hotels do not share this view either.
The extra space provided to you in a junior suite means you may be able to pull an extra bed off the couch if that hotel room has it. Some hotels might even be able to bring an extra bed that could fit in a junior suite, although I`ve never done that before. It doesn`t matter if it comes with origami swans, a nicely wrapped candy, and a bottle of champagne, a bedroom is not a suite. And not all suites are created equal. So, if not for all that fancy chic, how does a suite differ from a bedroom? If you pay for a junior suite (large room with separate sitting area with sofa), then part for a separate bed for a child and they turn the sofa into a bed, then it ceases to be a junior suite, but a room with 2 beds was charged twice for the privilege!! Like most people in the wire, I started wondering what a suite is after staying at W Muscat and getting a „junior suite“ as an upgrade. The technical definition seems to be a room with a separate living room and bedroom. However, the room I`m in is just a bigger room. I don`t know why or how it qualifies as a junior suite. Ben, I was at Sheraton Munich Airport a few months ago and I thought it was a bit of an interesting place. Besides the strange layout (like yours), I found it funny that the breakfast staff all wore the lederhosen and dirndl. You may also have encountered the possibility of booking a „Junior Suite“, which can be just as mysterious as these other rooms.
In this article, I`ll explain what to expect when booking a Junior Suite and give you some examples of some Junior Suites I`ve stayed in different hotels in the past. It was always a special room as it had a large wraparound balcony which gave you much more space for your room. In this case, this room was considered a junior suite, mainly due to the fact that it was simply a much larger room and lined the luxurious floor-to-ceiling windows on the walls. In this case, we stayed in the suite before. It was a beautiful suite with an original design intended to resemble the bow of a ship. You can look at this suite in the photo below and you will notice that there are no partitions separating the bedroom from the living area (except for a single column). And again, this room had a wraparound balcony which was lovely and opened up the rooms even more similar to the junior suite upstairs. But now, take a look at the wall below. Note that it acts as a partition separating the bedroom from the larger sitting area. Unlike a real suite, where the bedroom and sitting area are located in separate rooms, for this junior suite they are simply separated from each other. So if you`re traveling with a large group, are a family with kids, or need upgraded options for a special occasion, go for a suite.
It`s probably better than booking a vacation rental if you consider the amenities and hidden fees. It`s best to look at different options by comparing the number of beds you get, amenities included, extra services, and, of course, price. Whenever I see online that I`ve been upgraded to one, I usually shudder first, before I start my chewing gum review, how „junior“ it is, how „continental“ the breakfast is, and how resorty the resort really is. There doesn`t seem to be a universal definition of a junior suite, but it`s usually a hotel room with a larger seating area that`s not in a different room than the bedroom. However, hotels use this term quite vaguely and inconsistently, and as you`ll see below, a junior suite can take different forms. I always understood a junior suite the way they wanted. Basically, this is no longer a normal room. However, this room was considered one of the best suites in the hotel and was not described as a junior suite. Well, the question should be, what`s best next for me? Because it depends on your budget and your needs. We`ve seen regular one-bedroom suites be a big hit with families with babies or toddlers who specifically need a door that can be closed between the living room and bedroom. But our Starsellers are connecting suites that book 3.3 times more than their non-communicating counterparts and are huge with group travelers of up to 10 guests. Now, technically, the Sheraton Munich Airport had a separate lounge, separated by the wall in the photo, making it a junior suite.
Interestingly, not all suites are created equal, and some people end up getting a glorified room when they book a „luxury suite.“ That`s why it`s important to know what kind of suite you`re getting, ask questions, and see lots of photos of the suite.
