Investigators also participate in a series of training courses that improve their interrogation and observation skills, expose them to state-of-the-art forensic techniques, strengthen ethical rules and develop new investigative strategies. Paralegals participate in a „continuing education for paralegals“ program that enhances their skills and understanding of criminal law. For lawyers newly hired at our Criminal Appeals Office (CAB), the orientation program covers the first four months of employment and includes more than 30 separate days of training. The orientation program develops the skills and knowledge required for a new lawyer to provide a full range of client-centred post-conviction services and world-class appellate representation. An introduction to housing court is offered almost every year – but other intensive workouts vary by class. Trainers come from all over civil practice and our program is coordinated with other legal service providers in the city. Finally, supervisors work closely with new employees to ensure they are fully prepared to represent our clients in their first year of practice. To develop drafting and reasoning skills, each new lawyer in training writes an appeal brief in an actual misdemeanor case under the supervision of senior appellate lawyers. The new lawyers then hold the appeal hearing. This task ensures that each lawyer has submitted substantive legal work at the procedural level, which has been carefully criticized at the beginning of employment. It also allows lawyers to view cases „the other way around,“ offering countless benefits for their subsequent judicial practice. Programs include lectures where CAC supervisors and others discuss substantive issues related to post-conviction representation. These courses cover a wide range of areas of civil law practice, including: poverty law practice, legal skills ranging from drafting to preparing and practicing litigation, and ethical considerations in representing our clients. New CAB lawyers are assigned a first supervisor who works closely with them during the first months of their tenure. All new employees are assigned to teams of lawyers who meet weekly at lunchtime to discuss their cases as well as recent developments in law. They also participate in all training programs on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters. In addition, new EAC lawyers must use formal moot tribunals during their first year of practice. Zivilpraxis organises a biannual advocacy programme for housing practitioners. Participants prepare a case under the supervision of experienced housing lawyers, then negotiate their case in front of experienced practitioners who volunteer to hear our mock trials.
