AmeriCorps members will act as legal assistants under the direct supervision of an experienced GBLS lawyer, many of whom are considered national experts in their respective areas of poverty law. Their duties may include providing advice, recommendations, brief support and direct representation of clients at administrative hearings; Participation in community education and awareness activities, as well as other related work. GBLS is the leading provider of free, non-criminal legal assistance in the Greater Boston area, helping low-income individuals, families, and community organizations with a variety of poverty laws. Our staff works in the following specialized units to best solve the problems faced by people living in poverty in our service area: Asian Outreach, Seniors, Health and Disability, Employment, Family, Consumer Rights, Housing, Immigration, Wellness, Mass Health Insurance Advocacy Project and Criminal Record Information Project (CORI) and Back-to-School. In addition, our Cambridge and Somerville Legal Services Office (CASLS) provides legal assistance to residents of Cambridge, Somerville and surrounding towns in a number of these areas. A placement is available in the housing unit. Since 1986, Catholic Charities` Immigration Legal Services (ILS) program has effectively addressed the evolution of immigration laws in the Washington, D.C. area. Eligibility/Qualifications: Members must be at least 18 years of age, U.S. citizens, U.S. citizens, or lawful permanent residents of the United States. In addition, applicants must be college graduates interested in attending law school, attending law school in the evening, or a law graduate with an interest in public service law. Knowledge of a non-English language is desirable. Education Requirements: Bachelor`s degree, JD is encouraged to apply. Training courses are offered.
